Rice is a major crop in India and is grown in different climatic zones. As agriculture is mainly based on the spatial domain, the use of geospatial technologies in agriculture plays a crucial role in achieving target production.

IIRR manages a vast experimental database under the All India Coordinated Rice Research Program. Since 2000, ICAR-IIRR has been applying geospatial technologies to improve rice production. With this background, the IIRR Geo-Portal has been developed to visualize spatial layers developed at IIRR on real-world coordinates.

Technologies Used

The IIRR Geoportal was developed using the following open-source technologies:

  • GeoServer: to publish vector layers
  • QGIS: to develop spatial layers (shapefiles) and convert them to style files (.xml)
  • GeoExt: to view the published maps at exact locations on the world map
  • ExtJS: for designing the map window, toolbar, and layer panel
  • HTML, CSS, JS: for designing the home page

The portal was successfully published with features like:

  • Visualizing spatial layers with real-world coordinates
  • Finding longitude and latitude of any location
  • Calculating area and length of selected regions
